Snooping Bosses

You are being watched almost whatever you do and wherever you go. If you walk the streets of a mid-sized city you probably walk by a security cam. If you sit at home and surf the web you leave traces on several places: on your hard disc, at your Internet supplier and at the website you enter. At work someone can record your conversations, read your emails or even ask you to do a urine test. You might think that this doesn't affect you because you got nothing to hide. No matter what you think about the big brother society, it might have more impact on you than you think.

20 years ago it was unaccepted to sneak read another person's letters. Today it's accepted by authorities to read emails on behalf of terror control. Who let oneself be taken in that terrorists ever send secret information in unencrypted emails? As the snare is pulled harder and harder around the terrorists they tend to hide away even better. The same goes for the illegal file traders. They develop sophisticated closed and encrypted networks which makes it impossible to catch them. Then we have innocent Average Joe who have no intention to break the law. He is the one caught in the big brother's web. Even before the email he sent has been read by the receiver, it's been scanned and maybe even saved by the authorities.

Some say that if you got nothing to hide then you got nothing to worry about. But what if you're not even aware of your secrets. Put up a scenario where your boss wants you to do a urine test. By examine that urine it's possible to read your genetic code. In that code latent diseases can be seen like heart problems or if you are likely to get diabetes. Things which could affect your performance could also cost your employer a lot of money and therefore it's of very big interest for your boss. Today there's no law which gives the employer the right to force the employee to go through tests but the Labour Court has approved them to give notice to employees who refuse. I think this could well happen in the future that our children will be forced to do such tests even before they are approved for a job. I also think it's likely that we will be forced to do integrity insulting tests before we can get a life insurance. With this said I think we should be careful before we give too free reins to the ones who decide about our future. The future might not affect you, but it sure will our children.
